What is Narwhal?

In just a few weeks, COVID-19 has widened the space in which narrative change work may happen.

Narwhal is a group of international strategic comms and narratives experts who are helping to craft new narratives in the wake of COVID-19.

What do you do?

The group works together to explore and action narratives and meta-narratives for systems change. We do this by using complexity-informed approaches in futures, visioning and moral imaginations. We are a group of experts from different disciplines and networks which enables trans-contextual research and collaboration.

Context

In March 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic hit and Unbound Philanthropy and Migration Exchange wanted to support a response, via the coordination of strategic communications UK-wide and globally.

This led to the formation of different groups responding to different parts of the crisis, specifically in the field of narratives, strategic communications and the media’s response. The response had an overarching theme of belonging and integration in relation to refugee and migrant issues, and has since expanded to include these themes and others that are related.

The first conversation was framed inspired by Alice Sachrajda's blog, i.e. that the response will need different narratives at the beginning, middle and end of the crisis. Narwhal explores the end of the story - exploring longer-term narratives in response to morally imagined futures. It is convened by Phoebe Tickell.
