Dear Narwhals,
You are invited to the fourth convening of the Narwhal narratives group.
The topic of the call is "DETONATING NARRATIVES".
When: Jun 4, 2020 10:00 AM London
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
The landscape of narratives, and response to "counter" narratives is on fire at the moment. We want to have a conversation about this whole burgeoning field of "narratives" and what that means -- and start to unpick who gets to steer the narrative, why it's got so much attention lately, and potentially why it's the wrong place to intervene anyway. In this session we will be detonating little fireworks into the notions of narrative. Join us.
We will be welcoming: Nora Bateson (President of the International Bateson Institute) and Alina Siegfried (Narrative Strategist and Storyteller) to speak and spark off a discussion. You can read more about both speakers below.
Narwhal
Narwhal is the Narratives Working-group Hopeful and Longterm. You can read more about us here: https://narwhal.substack.com/
This group is for story-tellers, narrative strategists and communications experts inquiring about the longer-term narrative work needed post-COVID-19.
We have entered a liminal chapter in human history when there is an opportunity for narratives that help establish new patterns of how we organise society so that we #dontgobacktonormal.
Come along on Thursday if you:
Are keen to explore existing narratives and metaphors being used to describe the pandemic
Want to engage in collective sensemaking to develop stories and narratives of COVID-19 that lead to a more just and healthy world
Want an opportunity to connect or re-connect with other narrative makers who want to have an impact on the outcome of the COVID-19 pandemic
Want to challenge your understanding of stories and narratives and culture change.
Joining us this week…
Nora Bateson

Nora Bateson is an award-winning filmmaker, writer and educator, as well as President of the International Bateson Institute, based in Sweden. Her work asks the question “How we can improve our perception of the complexity we live within, so we may improve our interaction with the world?”. An international lecturer, researcher and writer, Nora wrote, directed and produced the award-winning documentary, An Ecology of Mind, a portrait of her father, Gregory Bateson. Her work brings the fields of biology, cognition, art, anthropology, psychology, and information technology together into a study of the patterns in ecology of living systems. Her book, Small Arcs of Larger Circles, released by Triarchy Press, UK, 2016 is a revolutionary personal approach to the study of systems and complexity.
The IBI integrates the sciences, arts and professional knowledge to create a qualitative inquiry of the integration of life. As President, Nora directs research projects at the IBI that require multiple contexts of research and interdependent processes. Asking, “How can we create a context in which to study the contexts?”, an impressive team of international thinkers, scientists and artists have been brought together by the IBI to generate an innovative form of inquiry, which Nora coined “Transcontextual Research”.

Alina Siegfried

Alina is an amazing poet, storyteller, slam poetry artist and organiser whom I met through the Edmund Hillary Fellowship in New Zealand. I was lucky enough to see her perform live - and have remembered her incredible poetry ever since! We’ve been lucky to have Alina in Narwhal and will be excited to hear from her on Thursday.
Alina’s biography:
Impact storyteller. Narrative Strategist. Mother. Pragmatic optimist. I'm passionate about creative communications and the use of storytelling for systems change. I offer content development, video storyboarding, impact reporting, story coaching, workshops, and strategy consulting for organisations and individuals who are working towards shifting narratives and creating positive impact, building on a set of diverse yet interconnected experiences developing communications strategies across government, business, startups and the NGO sector. www.alinasiegfried.com
I perform slam poetry under the alias Ali Jacs, and can often be found espousing thought-provoking messages from behind the safety of stage lights and a microphone. In 2012 I won the NZ National Poetry Slam, and went on to compete in the 2013 Women of the World Poetry Slam in Minneapolis.
